Whether we are fans of the series or not, it is undebatable that it in many ways defined the culture that those born in the late 20th Century and early 21st grew up in. You ask any fan why they have this obsession and they might answer in a hundred different ways. ‘The special effects’, ‘the light saber battles’, ‘the imaginative world’, ‘the space battles’, ‘the romance’… However, few realise that the real source of the heart and resonance of the series comes from something much deeper and much more fundamental to the human journey.
A young George Lucas was very taken by the work of the comparative mythologist, Joseph Campbell. Campbell discovered that if one was to compare the myths and legends of cultures from all over the world, one would find that there is an underlying story structure which is common to all. It is common because it is the fundamental human story and speaks to the deeper quest that all of us are on. This story is the myth of all myths which he called both ‘The Monomyth’ and ‘The Hero’s Journey’. Lucas used Campbell’s as a template for Star Wars. It is THE premier modern retelling of the monomyth and this is the true reason why this movie series resonated so deeply and fundamentally with the whole world.
If that were not enough, Lucas also blended this universal mythology with the life wisdom and spirituality of the East, drawing clearly on both Taoist and Buddhist thought. For many, this was their first exposure to Eastern spirituality and left a lasting impression.
In this fun and enlightening talk, you will see how Lucas used this amazing fantastical setting to take us on the Hero’s Journey. You will also discover the elements of East Asian philosophy and wisdom embedded in the film.
More than that, you will learn how you can use this wisdom to empower yourself and enrich your life, attracting great health, love and abundance. This will be an entertaining but also very practical talk where you will also get a chance to experience Qi Gong practices where you can develop the ability to ‘Feel the Force’ and tap into the power of the universe.
I can’t promise that you will be able to use it to levitate an X-Wing from a swamp in the Dagobar system but following the tried and tested practices from the East, you can use it for your own health and energy development and discover the secrets of the universe for yourself!
This talk will focus mainly on the original trilogy (4, 5 and 6) with some reference to the prequels (1, 2 and 3) and contain spoilers for every major plot element. So if you haven’t seen the movies and don’t want to hear spoilers, give them a watch before you come!
